Working in partnership to bring investment into our specialist sectors

05/09/2021 News

This month with are celebrating collaboration in our P=Partnership campaign. Sarah Thomas, Inward Investment Lead, York & North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (YNY LEP) shares her experience of working in partnership to bring investment into our specialist sectors.

I really enjoyed working in partnership with colleagues at the Leeds City Region LEP (LCR) and the Agri tech sector team at the Department for International Trade (DIT) to win our region’s first HPO (High Potential Opportunity).

The HPO was one of the 19 projects to be successful in their bids in the UK. The HPO programme was launched by DIT to increase inward investment into the UK and help the country to build back better. The programme selects investment opportunities to promote to foreign investors, driving investment into the UK’s regions and cities.

What is unique about this particular HPO is that it is built upon a solid commitment to joint working between LEPs. LCR and YNY have had close ties and geographies, with former cross over areas of Harrogate, Selby, Craven and York. I worked closely with Ken Brockbank, the Advanced Manufacturing Lead at LCR and together we enhanced our relationships with the Agri- tech team at DiT and quickly realised the breadth of the Agri-tech offer across the two regions.

With the support of the Agri -tech team we were able to put together a proposal based on the dual regions strengths and assets in Agri-tech, in particular with Controlled Environment Agriculture, with regionally positioned companies such P3P and APS Salads achieving growth in this sector. Our region also hosts world class research institutions such as CHAP (crop health and protection), the Stockbridge technology centre , Fera Science Ltd, N8 Agrifood, the York Biotech campus, Biovale and the Biorenewables Development Centre are all dedicated to enabling the transfer of technology from research to agricultural and industrial applications. Collectively, they are a huge draw for investors.

Partnership between LEPs will continue to build success in growing our investment proposition in the region, creating business growth and new, skilled jobs.
