The Future of LEPs: Our response to the Chancellor's announcement

The comments made by the Chancellor in his budget speech were set within the context of devolution, continuing the move towards LEP integration into Combined Authorities.

Combined Authorities have a greater level of democratic accountability, so it is positive to bring the role of LEPs into that context, alongside local authorities.

The York and North Yorkshire Mayoral Devolution deal was announced on Yorkshire Day, 1st August last year, so we are already advanced in our planning for the integration of the LEP into the Mayoral Combined Authority.

The MCA will work in partnership with the unitary councils and businesses to drive economic development in our region to deliver local and regional impact. Having a Mayor for York & North Yorkshire will drive forward significant opportunity for our region, reflected in the precedence given to MCA areas for the Investment Zones announced yesterday.

Our focus remains consistent, as we continue our work and build the opportunities to ensure the Mayor can create wins for our region as soon as they are in post.
