WITH post EU referendum bringing uncertainty in the markets, we outlined our major successes and investments over the past year at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Harrogate on Friday 08 July.
Since the launch of our Strategic Economic Plan in April 2014, the GVA of our area's economy has grown by £1.4 billion creating over 21,900 new jobs ,and with house building increasing by 71 per cent since 2014, we are well on track to deliver our ambitious targets.
Barry Dodd CBE, Chair of the LEP said:
“Having negotiated a £122 million Growth Deal from Government last year, we needed to demonstrate we could deliver on our promises, and I am very proud to say that we did. Not only did we deliver our target £30 million investment, we also backed our partners, helping FERA Science secure £50 million investment for two agri-tech centres of excellence whilst supporting York Potash mine to achieve planning permission for the largest private sector investment in the Northern Powerhouse.”
James Farrar, Chief Operating Officer added “We are an area with global opportunities, underpinned by thousands of great small businesses. Success for us means businesses investing and delivering quality jobs for people across our region. The 71 per cent increase in house building is testament to all of our partners from local authorities to house builders working together to drive delivery. We were ambitious in our proposal to government, we promised jobs and homes and we are delivering on those promises. Whilst there has been much speculation following the EU Referendum result, we are focusing on our world class assets, securing the investment level and making the most of opportunities which will arise."
Enterprise Zone status for York Central will create 7,500 jobs, whilst investment along the Yorkshire Coast from offshore wind to the doubling of rail services between York and Scarborough will provide major opportunity along the coast.
The York, North Yorkshire & East Riding LEP has demonstrated that a clear vision and strong partnerships can deliver real results and urges government to work with the area to maximise growth as it makes plans post referendum.
